Being A Dark Skin (Colourism)

Colourism is the root of skin bleaching epidemic in darker skinned women, light skin is privileged is a thing, Don’t deny!

Is colourism still a norm?

Colorism is a prejudice against those with darker skin tones. Colorism exist, day in and day out.

I was born in this society were in having a dark skin is considered ugly. They say “black is everyone’s favorite color until it’s in your skin”.All my life , half of the years I’ve lived or had the mentality to raise my voice I was treated differently because of my skin or better yet because of my complexion.

Colorism is used by a black person to another black person just because one’s skin will be lighter than the other, in other words Colorism is being used by people of the same race. While some say that they are color-blind, it's hard to deny that many people not only see color but they also use it as a way to judge or determine someone’s character.

 Colourism is also rooted in racism , Colourism finds it’s roots in racism because, without racism, someone’s value and perceived superiority wouldn't be based on the color of their skin.

Because of a different skin tone (dark skin) people will consider you or look at differently and by differently I mean in an ugly way for instance. When you have a dark skin or complexion people will treat you different from a person with a light complexion or better yet “ yellow bone’s “ , they will treat you like you are not one of them (less human) based on your skin tone. In western countries there is a certain way that colorism play out it’s part , an old children’s rhyme captures the definition of colorism and its inner workings:                                                          “If you’re black, stay back;
If you’re brown, stick around;
If you’re yellow, you’re mellow;
If you’re white, you’re all right.”

One of the most common colourism myths is that white people can’t be colourist or that it’s only an issue within our own communities. This myth is one of the reasons people assume colorism is a less important issue. They think the only issue we face in the larger world outside our individual communities is racism. But we are just as likely to experience colorism outside of our communities as racism. And actually, many things we attribute to racism are actually better explained through a lens of colorism. Though it is true that Colourism runs deep in our community.

My story as a black girl

This is a story about myself , I was born with a dark skin tone, I can say it’s from my father’s side...for one when I was young it wasn’t that much of a problem but growing up I saw life differently mostly because of how people treated me as soon as they notice my complexion and it was the first thing a person would notice as soon as they set their eyes on me, they called me names like I’m not somebody’s daughter. I was told I shouldn’t show more of my skin (wearing short things) because my skin is dark. You might accept yourself but the society will make you think otherwise.

People tend to only accept you as a dark skin if you have an hourglass body, with a clean face without pimples nor dark spots thats when the society will look at you differently or as one of them

Social media has a tendency of showing their love and support for people with dark skin tone only on social media but the main problem is that it ends on social media only ,on reality they dont have that love and support . Colourism exist, its happening and it’s destroying and killing people day in and day out. We are killing each other because of how we reflect on certain thing’s.

Beauty isn’t define by your shade of skin or size. Society has put these distorted classifications on skin shades and what they think our bodies should look like. Your worth has NOTHING to do with your shade of skin or weight so don’t curse it for the way it varies from someone else’s!
